The goal of a diabetic sensitive diet is to control your blood sugar. If you are being attacked by diabetes, you certainly do not want your blood sugar bouncing all over the place.

How do you get an insulin and glucose overload? Though it may not always be from what you eat (check with your professional care giver to confirm the reason for to much insulin and/or glucose in your system). Lets look at what happens when you eat an empty carbohydrate ( plain white sugar, cookies, candy, cake, white bread, etc.)

When you eat an empty carbohydrate or a complex carbohydrate for that matter, your body breaks it down into sugar. That sugar gets transferred into your system. When your body senses sugar in your system, your pancreas produces insulin. All well and good.

Insulin is like a bus in that it takes the glucose in your blood and delivers it to the muscles where it is either burned immediately for energy, or stored for future use. When to store glucose, your muscles convert it to glycogen. When your muscles have enough glucose stored, they tell the insulin to go away. So the insulin is floating around your body, but it has not done its job, so it tires to force the muscles ot open up. They refuse and the pancreas makes more insulin thinking that it is an insulin problem. The muscles are forced open this time, but the cycle keeps on going. That is one cause of high glucose and insulin. The insulin can not do it’s job because the muscles are over saturated and have shut off taking on more glucose.

So the craving for sweets and sweet things can wreak havoc on your system. Now that you can see how empty carbohydrates can hurt you what do you use instead of sugar. Well, there are a lot of artificial sweeteners. Sweeteners like aspartame, saccharine, sucralose, and others.
