The herb STEVIA rebaudiana is plant belonging to the chrysanthemum family. Stevia is native to South America. Stevia leaves have been used for centuries as sweeteners by indigenous peoples, who added it to bitter medicines and teas. Certain Paraguayan Stevia plant strains are renowned around the world and famous for producing the best stevia plants. Stevia seeds and plants from Paraguay have been exported to China, and other countries in the world. However, due to over harvesting, and other conditions, the high quality stevia plants from Paraguay are few and far between. Most of the growers in Paraguay and around the world are growing a low grade (poor quality taste) stevia plant. Today stevia is commercially cultivated in many countries around the world including China, Korea, Malaysia, and many countries in South America. In World War 2 the British were considering commercially cultivating Stevia as there was a sugar shortage at the time.
